Origins
of the campaign
Support local businesses and strengthen our community
In
March 2006, Cyclone Larry devastated Innisfail. The catastrophic
winds caused severe damage to the township and left many businesses
unable to service the needs of the community.
While struggling
to rebuild and repair, these businesses were forced to watch regular
customers travel to other towns and cities to replace household
items and other belongings destroyed by the cyclone – depriving
Innisfail’s battered commercial centre of sorely needed income.
Physical
infrastructure has been restored and the Innisfail CBD is now back
in business. However, the disruption to local spending habits caused
by Cyclone Larry has left a lingering concern in the Innisfail
business community about the level of patronage and support they
can expect from residents in the future.
The Innisfail
Chamber of Commerce is seeking to address these concerns by launching
a campaign designed to bring about a long-term shift in consumer
culture.
The “I’m
a real local” campaign aims to encourage residents to develop a
sense of pride in and commitment to a healthy local business district
which can offer them an impressive range of consumer goods and
a degree of personalised service they could not obtain outside
Innisfail.
